FAMILY DAY

All Things Gullah

Enjoy a day of fun for the whole family with arts and crafts activities, demonstrations, storytelling, live entertainment, a vendor’s marketplace, and an orator’s circle. The event accompanies the exhibition Word, Shout, Song: Lorenzo Dow Turner Connecting Communities through Language. Activities represent Gullah/Geechee culture. The marketplace gives an opportunity for local artisans, particularly those east of the Anacostia River, to sell their crafts. The marketplace also features artisans from the coastal regions of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, with crafts and items representing Gullah/Geechee culture. The orator’s circle provides a venue for people to share their Gullah/Geechee experiences. The event ends with what promises to be the largest "Ring Shout" ever recorded.

Marketplace vendors must apply by June 7, 2011, in order to be included. Space is limited.

For more information on the event, call our special events office at 202.633.4875.

To receive a vendor’s marketplace registration packet, call Soyini George at 202-633-4807 or send e-mail to GeorgeS@si.edu.
